Why blending exists
Without consolidated billing, an RI bought in one account would only discount that account. AWS blends rates across linked accounts so the savings are shared, which keeps the commercial incentive to centralize purchases.
When to use blended vs unblended
Use unblended cost for per-project allocation — it preserves the per-account economics. Use blended cost for total-organization reporting where the savings should be shared.

Does this only apply to AWS?
The blended-rate concept is AWS-specific, but GCP and Azure have similar redistribution mechanisms with different names.
Why do my project totals not match the invoice?
If you're using blended rates in the project rollup and unblended on the invoice (or vice versa), the totals will differ by the redistribution amount.
