Where egress hides

Inter-region replication, cross-AZ traffic, NAT Gateway processing, CloudFront-to-origin, and customer-facing API responses are all egress vectors that don't show up on the resource-by-resource cost view. They appear as a 'Data Transfer' line that doesn't name the source resource.

Why it scales with traffic

An idle instance has near-zero egress; a popular customer's traffic can dominate egress for an entire account. This means egress cost can grow without any infrastructure change — making it the line most likely to surprise.

Frequently asked

Why is AWS egress so expensive?

AWS egress to the public internet is generally $0.05–$0.09 per GB, which compounds quickly for high-traffic workloads. Cloudflare R2 and DO Spaces are cheaper alternatives for egress-heavy use cases.

Does DigitalOcean charge egress?

DigitalOcean includes a per-Droplet bandwidth allowance and charges $0.01/GB above it — generally cheaper than AWS for egress-heavy workloads.
